With spring sales approaching, are you prepared?

With spring sales fast approaching, it’s likely many producers are planning to ship their young animals to saleyards and processors in the coming months.
Now is a critical time for producers to be aware of the mandatory electronic identification (eID) requirements that came into effect earlier this year, meaning that:
- all sheep and farmed goats born on or after 1 January 2025 must now be fitted with an approved NLIS electronic identification (eID) device prior to leaving their property of birth, and
- visual tags will no longer be acceptable identification for these animals.
It’s also important for producers to make sure they are selecting the correct species-specific devices for their animals. This guide explains which devices are required, depending on the animal being identified.
Follow these steps to ensure you’re complying with the mandatory requirements of the national sheep and goat eID rollout.
