The NLIS is changing

The NLIS is changing

29 June 2025 | 3-Min Read

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) database is evolving to better meet the needs of its users.

The NLIS Database Uplift Project is a major project to improve Australia’s livestock traceability platform. The project, which kicked off in July 2023, is administered by Integrity Systems Company (ISC) and supported by a $22.5 million Australian Government funding grant.

The uplifted NLIS is expected to be completed by June 2026, ensuring Australia has a fit-for-purpose and user-friendly traceability platform to track all livestock movements.

Progress to date

With Stages 1, 2 and 3 now complete, Stages 4 and 5 are currently underway.

Stage 4 is focused on building the system architecture and front-end design concepts, with this work expected to complete later this year.

At the same time, work on Stage 5 has also commenced, with the launch of a new Developer Portal now enabling third-party software providers to begin work to integrate smoothly with the uplifted NLIS.

You can read more about the specific stages and release of the project on the ISC website.

Delivering a new look and improved functionality

Ensuring the uplifted NLIS is easy to use and has a fresh, modern look have been key project objectives. New concept designs for the user dashboard have been produced and the number of steps required to complete many common NLIS actions have been reduced.

You can see some examples of the proposed concepts on the uplifted NLIS user experience webpage.

Sharing the new look NLIS with users

Over the past few months, the ISC team has been on the move and sharing new concepts for the uplifted NLIS with producers – giving them an opportunity to test the new dashboards for themselves.

In April, ISC hosted a lunch for producers in the Cattle Pavillion during Cattle Week at this year’s Sydney’s Royal Easter Show before heading to Tamworth for the 2025 Angus EXPO in May.

Processors also had the chance to test out the new dashboards when the team attended the Meat Processors and Exporters Conference on the Gold Coast in April.
