Is LPA accreditation right for you?
LPA Accreditation is a voluntary program. Cattle, sheep and goats entering into the food supply chain for the purpose of general human consumption will not be accepted without an NVD or eNVD (National Vendor Declaration). You must be LPA accredited to access NVDs and eNVDs. The NVD or eNVD captures documented evidence of livestock history risk factors and on-farm practices when moving livestock through the supply chain.
It is vital for Australia’s food safety, biosecurity and market access in the red meat industry.
Below we have provided some guidance to help you decide if you need to be LPA accredited:
If the below apply to you and you DO intend to move the animals off your property, then you MUST apply for LPA accreditation. You must use NVDs or eNVDs and ensure your livestock are tagged with NLIS ear tags.
You require your livestock to be processed by an abattoir. Any livestock in Australia to be slaughtered for the purpose of general human consumption can only be processed with an accompanied NVD or ENVD. To access NVDs, you have to apply for LPA accreditation.
You intend to sell your livestock to a Producer holding LPA accreditation.
You are leasing / agisting your livestock on an unaccredited LPA property.
If the below applies to you and you DO NOT intend to move the animals off your property, then you may not require LPA accreditation.
You are a hobby farmer and only have animals for pets.
Your animals are old and will die on the property.
Your animals are mainly for the purpose to keep the grass down / weed control.
Your animals are on leased property and do not need to be sold later on.
Your animals are intended to be consumed at your domestic property.
Your property has been sold.
Your animals are on leased property and do not need to be sold later on.
If the below apply to you and you DO intend to move the animals off your property, then you may not require LPA accreditation. You must acquire a Waybill from your local DPI and ensure your livestock are tagged with NLIS ear tags.
You only have a few animals to sell off as the financial or commercial cost to acquire and maintain LPA accreditation which requires auditing the property is not feasible.
Your animals are intended to be for human consumption only in your local area.
You only intend to move/ sell your few animals to a producer who is also not LPA accredited. Reminder: Producers from unaccredited LPA PICs cannot on-sell in the supply chain and will not be accepted in saleyards by your agent or for processing at an abattoir. Your LPA accreditation status will be checked.
If your circumstances change and you no longer wish to keep your LPA accreditation which requires LPA auditing of your PIC perhaps because you currently do not have any animals currently on the property, then you can choose to cancel your LPA accreditation and reapply when it suits. You may contact the LPA Help center and your LPA account associated with the PIC that was initially registered can be reinstated.
