Have your say: proposed changes to the NLIS Animal Identification Technology Requirements

Integrity Systems Company (ISC) is inviting feedback on proposed changes to the Requirements for NLIS Animal Identification Technology (the Standard) as part of the program's scheduled review, undertaken with the NLIS Device Standards Committee.

What we are seeking feedback on

We are seeking feedback on the proposed changes only. The proposed changes are:

  • Removal of visual-only (non-electronic) identification from the Standard.
  • Clarified printing contrast to ensure the printing on a device is visually readable.
  • Packaging to state the specific name and brand of the applicator that must be used with the device.
  • PIC validation when ordering secondary components (e.g. spare male pins), and reporting of secondary-component sales to the Program Administrator.
  • Isolation/destruction of any batch found defective before dispatch.
  • Critical and major nonconformity reporting clarified as no later than 2 business days.
  • Clarified colour ordering requirements for sheep and goat devices.

Why the main change is proposed

Removing visual-only identification aligns the Standard with the mandatory electronic identification (eID) of sheep and goats nationally from 1 January 2027. This change does not prevent the sale of visual-only tags — it means those tags will not be able to bear the NLIS logo.

Important — scope of this consultation

This consultation relates to the proposed changes only. Requirements that are not changing are outside the scope of this review. Suggestions about unchanged requirements will be recorded and can be considered at the next scheduled review of the Standard.
