UX / UI Enhancements
(User Experience / User Interface)
User testing, industry consultation and feedback remain central to the development of the uplifted NLIS database. Modernising the user interface is a key objective of the project and significant design work has been underway to enable easier navigation and ensure uniformity across workflows.
Design Principles
Some key themes have emerged about what NLIS users want to see in the uplifted NLIS Database. As we work through the Architecture and Design, Software Build, and Phased Deployment and transition, these key themes guide the delivery of the NLIS Uplift Project to enhance your experience. These key themes are:
Stage 3 Architecture & Design
The key focus for Stage 3 was to utilise the insights and feedback gathered during the first two stages to design the new platform. This has involved simplifying workflow processes and designing a modern, user-friendly interface. To achieve this, the project team studied the current steps and processes (workflows), and examined how these can be minimised, merged or eliminated to save users time and effort while not impacting the system’s functionality.
Another key focus has been pairing these simplified workflow processes with a modern, user-friendly interface that is intuitive and easy to use, some early concept designs of which can be seen below.
Designing a modern user interface
Designing a more modern, user friendly interface has been a key focus during stages 3 and 4. A range of concepts were tested with industry, and the feedback from across the supply chain directly influenced each iteration of the user interface.
Displayed are two early concept designs that we sought feedback on from our end users.

Customised dashboards
Concepts for personalised landing pages have also been developed for the various user groups. While the landing page design will be consistent for most users, the four "key actions" displayed will be personalised based on individual usage patterns. These actions are pre-set according to the most common tasks for each user type, ensuring that the most-used functions are always within easy reach. Thorough testing was undertaken to identify the top usage actions for each user group. Below you will see the latest concept for the producer dashboard.
Uplifted NLIS database prototype
As the design concepts of the uplifted NLIS Database are tested and verified, work to develop testing prototypes gets underway. An early prototype was presented recently to a group of Industry representatives and end users, showcasing some of the features and processes from a producers perspective. Check out the recording below and let us know your thoughts, by filling out this form.
It's important to remember that the prototype used in this recording will continue to go through multiple rounds of testing, review and improvement based on user feedback.
