Registering for a PIC

How to get a PIC

If you own or manage livestock in Australia, you’ll need a Property Identification Code, commonly known as a PIC. A PIC is a unique eight-character code that identifies parcels of land used for keeping livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats and more.

You can apply for a PIC for each property you own or lease, or combine multiple properties into one PIC if it suits how you manage your livestock. The important thing is that each PIC accurately reflects the land where your livestock are kept or moved through.

To apply, you’ll need to contact the Department of Agriculture in your state or territory, as PICs are managed at a state level.

Do you need a PIC

If you own Sheep, Cattle, or Goats, you must have a PIC. It’s a legal requirement and a vital part of Australia’s traceability system. PICs link your livestock to a location, which is essential for:

  • Buying and selling livestock
  • Using National Vendor Declarations (eNVD)
  • Completing NLIS transfers
  • Ensuring your property is covered in case of a disease outbreak or emergency

Even if you only keep a small number of animals or you’re just starting out, having a PIC ensures you’re doing the right thing from the start.
