Warning emails help protect your livestock’s lifetime traceability

The NLIS database sends warning emails when there’s been a loss of traceability for livestock attached to your PIC number.

Warning 6 emails relate to saleyard transfers and Warning 21 emails relate to transfers not involving a saleyard.

These warnings are generated when livestock are registered to your PIC number in the NLIS database, but a different PIC number has been used in a new NLIS transfer. This discrepancy occurs when a previous transfer wasn’t recorded in the database.

What to do when you receive a warning

These warning emails will confirm the PIC numbers involved and provide a list of the relevant NLIS devices (both the electronic RFID number and the printed visual NLISID number).

You can use the Search the PIC register report within your NLIS account to verify the PIC details provided.

Once the Uplifted NLIS is complete, these warning emails will contain a direct link to the PIC register search function.

Avoid warning emails by confirming your transfers have been recorded

The receiving party is responsible for ensuring the NLIS transfer has been accurately recorded within 48 hours of the livestock arriving.

Saleyard transfers: When you purchase livestock from a saleyard they will submit the transfer. However, you should still confirm the transfer has been recorded.

You can do this by logging in to your NLIS account and selecting the “Livestock transferred onto PIC (device report)” option from the “View/generate all reports” dropdown menu on the homepage.

If you notice the saleyard hasn’t processed the transfer or has made mistake, contact them immediately and request they correct the transfer details.

If an agent conducts a transfer on your behalf, ask them to provide you with the corresponding NLIS Upload ID and upload status as confirmation the transfer has been recorded correctly.

Private sales: If you’ve sold livestock privately, you can confirm the receiving party has correctly completed the NLIS transfer by logging in to your NLIS account and using the “Livestock moved off my property” function to transfer the NLIS devices off your PIC number yourself.

Checking your transfers are up to date

You can also complete a PIC reconciliation to ensure the NLIS database records match your own on-farm records.

Departments of agriculture in every state regularly monitor the NLIS database to identify receivers of livestock who frequently fail to complete their NLIS transfers.

These producers will not only receive multiple NLIS warning emails, they also put their livestock’s lifetime traceability at risk and increase their likelihood of a targeted audit (where the LPA program has identified regular non-compliance).
