Development of NLIS 2.0 is well underway.
Designed to strengthen Australia’s livestock traceability system, the project will deliver improvements to the database, underlying technology and user experience, creating a secure, modern platform for industry.
Independent experts have reviewed the design, specialist delivery teams are in place, and the approach was successfully tested before full-scale development began.
Integrity Systems is now working towards delivering a modernised database designed to support Australia’s red meat traceability system well into the future. Go-live is targeted for late 2027.
The planning and design phase is complete. The approach to building the database has been approved, the migration process is being tested, and historical data is being reviewed and validated to support a smooth transition to NLIS 2.0.
For more than 25 years, NLIS has underpinned the Australian red meat industry’s global reputation for traceability, biosecurity and market access. NLIS 2.0 represents the first major upgrade since the system’s inception.
Our commitment is to delivering a secure, user-friendly and future-ready system that reflects the complexity of Australia’s livestock supply chain and supports industry needs for years to come.
Specialists in technology, traceability systems and major project delivery are working within Integrity Systems to guide development and help ensure the new platform meets industry needs.
Significant time has been invested in reviewing, refining and documenting system requirements to ensure the platform is ready for build and delivers the outcomes industry expects from day one.
The system was independently reviewed and validated before development commenced.
Before full development commenced, key parts of the design were tested using real-world traceability scenarios to confirm the approach would meet operational requirements.
Before full development commenced, representative traceability scenarios were successfully tested to validate both system performance and user workflows. These included activities such as issuing devices, recording livestock movements and managing traceability exceptions.
The platform is being built in stages. Each part, or domain, of the system is developed, tested and validated before being integrated into the broader platform. This approach helps identify issues early and ensures each domain performs as intended before the complete system comes together.
A core promise of NLIS 2.0 is a simpler, more intuitive experience for the people who use the system every day. The link below provides illustrative concepts showing the types of workflows the platform will support. Final designs will be progressively shared as development continues.
Now to July 2027
Platform development
Development teams continue building, testing and integrating all parts of the NLIS 2.0 platform.
From August 2027
Systems integration testing
Comprehensive testing to confirm all elements operate together as a single system.
User testing
End-user validation
Participants from across the livestock supply chain test the platform to help confirm it meets user needs before launch.
Late 2027
Target go-live
Subject to successful testing and readiness activities, NLIS 2.0 is expected to go-live in late 2027.
Integrity Systems will provide practical training and support to help supply chain users move to NLIS 2.0. Training will be tailored to the needs of different user groups and delivered through webinars, train-the-trainer workshops, face-to-face sessions and self-paced learning materials.
End-user support will continue through the Integrity Systems customer service team after launch.
NLIS 1.0 continues to perform well and will support industry until NLIS 2.0 goes live. The database was upgraded several years ago to improve capacity and performance and is already processing electronic identification (eID) devices and transactions at scale. The introduction of mandatory sheep and goat eID from 1 January 2027 does not depend on NLIS 2.0 and will be fully supported by the current system.
90M+
Head of livestock movements recorded last year
70M+
New sheep and goat eIDs uploaded from tag manufacturers since January 2024
$22.5M
Australian Government grant funding the NLIS 2.0 program
As development progresses, Integrity Systems will share updates, new features and previews of the platform. Regular updates will be published on the Integrity Systems website, and demonstrations will be made available to industry stakeholders as new parts of the platform are completed.
